Question: Vacation and Jury Duty?

( Back )

Answer #1:

Have her call the court and advise she already has pre-paid (assuming this is the case) hotel and flight reservations. She would need to provide proof of that. Hopefully they can let her out of it.

Answer #2:

Sorry but no. Jury Duty comes first over taking a vacation.

Excuses from jury service:

1. So physically or mentally infirm that they are not up to the task of jury duty; or
2. Whose presence is required elsewhere for public welfare, health, or safety; or
3. If service on a jury would cause an extraordinary or compelling personal hardship.

Answer #3:

Have her call the court and request that her jury duty be postponed.

Answer #4:

She can call the clerk's office and explain the situation. It's possible that they will be willing to reschedule her service. I'm not in Kansas, but I did something similar when I was summoned for duty last year. I explained what was going on, and they rescheduled me for a week later than originally.

They didn't seem too bothered by it, actually. I did call a whole month in advance, though. The more notice you can give them, the more likely that they'll be able to be flexible with scheduling.

Answer #5:

Have her call the prosecuting attorney and request a full explanation of what "jury nullification" is. She will NOT be called.

Answer #6:

It's bad enough that they try to disrupt your life by making you do jury duty for some pathetic looser! They have no right messing up your vacation! Go on vacation and deal with it when you come back!
